Propane tanks are pressure vessels that store a hazardous, flammable material. Propane Tank Marketplace wants every customer to understand exactly what they are buying, what condition it is in, and what is required to use it safely and legally.

Please read this disclosure before ordering. It explains our products, the standards they meet, and the responsibilities that come with owning and using a propane tank.

All Tanks Ship Empty

Every tank and cylinder we sell ships completely empty of propane. This is required by federal Department of Transportation (DOT) rules.

We do not sell, ship, or deliver propane gas. We sell the tanks and related equipment only.

After delivery, you must arrange for your tank to be filled by a licensed propane supplier in your area.

Certification: DOT and ASME

Our tanks are built to recognized safety standards, shown on each product page.

DOT cylinders are portable tanks built to U.S. Department of Transportation specifications. These include the smaller cylinders used for grills, RVs, forklifts, and similar uses.

ASME tanks are stationary tanks built to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. These include larger residential, commercial, and underground tanks that stay in one place.

Handling, storage, and installation of propane tanks are also governed by NFPA 58, the national standard for liquefied petroleum gas, along with state and local codes.

Product Condition

We clearly label the condition of every product. Please read it before buying.

New tanks are unused and carry the manufacturer’s certification.

Refurbished and used tanks have been inspected and prepared for sale. They may show cosmetic wear, and their price reflects their condition.

Used and refurbished cylinders may require requalification or recertification, and may need a leak check and purge, before a licensed supplier will fill them. Requalification requirements and intervals are set by federal regulation and depend on the type and age of the cylinder.

Scrapped tanks and any item marked “as is” are sold for scrap, parts, or non pressurized use only. They are not certified to hold propane and must never be filled or pressurized.

Filling Your Tank

Only a licensed, qualified propane supplier should fill your tank.

The supplier is responsible for confirming the tank is in a safe, fillable condition, including any required requalification, valve condition, and leak testing.

Never attempt to fill, transfer, or pressurize a tank yourself, and never fill a tank that is damaged, out of date for requalification, or marked as not for propane use.

Installation and Permits

Portable cylinders are generally used as delivered, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Stationary and underground tanks usually require professional installation. In many areas they also require permits, minimum distance (setback) compliance, and inspection before use.

You are responsible for knowing and following the rules that apply where you live, for obtaining any required permits, and for using qualified, licensed professionals to install and service your tank.

We recommend contacting your local fire marshal, building department, or a licensed propane company before you buy a large or stationary tank, to confirm what your site allows.

Safe Handling and Storage

Keep tanks away from heat sources, open flames, and ignition sources.

Store and use tanks in well ventilated areas and never inside enclosed living spaces unless the equipment is specifically designed and rated for it.

Protect valves and fittings from damage, and check regularly for leaks using approved methods. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave the area and contact your propane supplier or emergency services.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable codes for your specific tank and use.

By purchasing from us, you accept responsibility for the safe, legal installation, filling, storage, use, and maintenance of your tank.

Propane Tank Marketplace supplies the tank and equipment. We are not responsible for how a tank is installed, filled, or used after delivery, and we are not liable for damage, injury, or loss caused by improper handling, installation, filling, or use.
