Propane tanks are pressure vessels designed to safely store liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Because propane is a flammable fuel, it is important that every customer understands the proper handling, installation, and use of the products we sell.
This Safety & Compliance Disclosure explains the standards our products are built to, the responsibilities of propane tank ownership, and important safety information to review before placing an order.
All Tanks Ship Empty
Every propane tank and cylinder sold by Propane Tank Marketplace is shipped completely empty of propane in accordance with applicable U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
We sell propane tanks and related equipment only.
We do not sell, transport, or deliver propane fuel.
After delivery, customers are responsible for arranging filling through a licensed propane supplier.
Product Certifications
Our products are manufactured or certified to recognized industry standards where applicable.
DOT Cylinders
Portable propane cylinders are manufactured in accordance with applicable U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and are commonly used for:
Grills
RVs
Forklifts
Temporary heating equipment
Welding applications
ASME Tanks
Stationary propane tanks are manufactured in accordance with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
These tanks are commonly used for:
Residential propane storage
Commercial propane systems
Agricultural applications
Underground propane installations
Installation, placement, and operation of propane tanks are also subject to NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code) as well as applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Product Condition
Every product listing clearly identifies the condition of the item being sold.
New Products
New tanks are unused and include the manufacturer’s applicable certifications.
Refurbished & Used Products
Refurbished and used tanks are inspected prior to sale.
These products may display cosmetic wear consistent with previous use. Any applicable recertification or requalification information is provided on the product page where available.
Some used cylinders may require inspection, leak testing, purging, or recertification before they can be legally filled.
Final Sale Products
Products identified as Final Sale, As-Is, or For Parts Only are not intended for propane storage unless specifically stated.
These products should never be filled or pressurized.
Filling Your Tank
Propane tanks should only be filled by a qualified and licensed propane supplier.
Before filling, the supplier may inspect:
Certification status
Valve condition
Tank condition
Leak integrity
Applicable requalification requirements
Never attempt to fill, modify, repair, or pressurize a propane tank yourself.
Installation Requirements
Portable cylinders are generally ready for use when handled in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Residential, commercial, and underground propane tanks typically require professional installation.
Depending on your location, installation may require:
Building permits
Fire code compliance
Minimum setback requirements
Inspection by local authorities
Customers are responsible for complying with all applicable local regulations.
We recommend consulting your local building department, fire marshal, or licensed propane supplier before purchasing a stationary propane tank.
Safe Handling & Storage
For safe operation:
Keep propane tanks away from open flames, excessive heat, and ignition sources.
Store tanks outdoors in well-ventilated areas.
Never store propane cylinders inside homes or enclosed occupied spaces unless specifically permitted by applicable codes.
Protect valves and fittings from physical damage.
Periodically inspect tanks for visible damage or leaks.
If you smell propane or suspect a leak, leave the area immediately and contact your propane supplier or emergency services.
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable safety regulations.
Customer Responsibility
Customers are responsible for ensuring propane tanks are:
Properly installed
Properly maintained
Properly inspected
Filled by qualified propane professionals
Operated in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations
Propane Tank Marketplace supplies propane tanks and related equipment but does not perform propane filling, installation, or onsite inspection services.
